Self-Storage in Cape Town: What to Look For Before You Sign

Not all storage facilities are equal. Cape Town has plenty of options, here's what to check before committing to a unit, and why location matters more than you think.

Cape Town has a growing number of self-storage options, from large national chains to independent facilities like Fairweather House. The difference between a good and a frustrating storage experience almost always comes down to the same few factors.

Location is the most underestimated factor. A storage unit that saves you R200 a month but adds 20 minutes to every trip quickly becomes a false economy. For Cape Town residents, Woodstock and Zonnebloem sit centrally, accessible from the CBD, the Southern Suburbs, and the Atlantic Seaboard without major highway time.

Check what access actually means. "24/7 access" sounds like the standard, but make sure you understand what it involves, some facilities require staff to let you in. At Fairweather, staffed office hours are Monday to Thursday 08:30–16:30 and Friday 08:30–16:00, with weekend and after-hours access available by appointment, confirmed via email.

Lift capacity matters if you're storing furniture. A 500kg lift sounds fine until you need to move a heavy fridge or a solid wood dining table. Our lift at Fairweather House has a 2-ton capacity specifically because our tenants move real things.

Ask about ground floor availability for heavy items. Not everything can go in a lift, and having a ground floor option for oversized or extremely heavy goods saves significant effort.

Finally, read the lease. Month-to-month is genuinely better for most people, life changes, and you shouldn't be locked into storage you no longer need. All Fairweather leases are month-to-month with one calendar month's written notice.
